“My name is John Mcgann, I am writing to you regarding a collection of aboriginal pottery that have been in my family since my father, Gerry Mcgann, purchased them after the closure of the Darbyshire pottery business. He and his brother were builders and operated a building company on Scarborough Beach Rd (where Scarborough Toyota now stands). I have a vivid memory of kilns, boxes of pottery both blanks and fired stacked in the back of their workshop as when I visited the premises I used to love playing with all the pieces.” John’s collection was assessed by collector Robert Cock in 2019: “Interestingly most of the aboriginal figures appeared to be unfinished, they had been coloured brown and glazed, however the fine details like eyes, loin cloths, teeth and toenails had not been applied, nor had the characteristic gold DW under the piece. It is my opinion that these pieces were obtained upon closure of the factory and before the pieces could be finished.”
